George Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue opens the evening with its unmistakable blend of classical and jazz influences, setting the stage for a night of musical brilliance.
Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, a towering masterpiece of the orchestral repertoire, follows—its sweeping melodies and triumphant finale providing a fitting celebration of the festival’s legacy.
The evening culminates in a historic world premiere: Symphony No. 1 by acclaimed composer Juan Pablo Contreras. Specially commissioned for our 50th anniversary, this groundbreaking work promises to captivate audiences with its fresh voice and vibrant orchestral colors.

The Victoria Bach Festival celebrates our 50th anniversary season in 2025. Led by Artistic Director Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez, the Festival honors the work of J.S. Chamber Music in Oklahoma Concert: William Hagen, Violin; Andrei Ionita, Cello; and Anton Nel, Piano
The riveting American violinist William Hagen has appeared as a soloist with many of the world's great orchestras including the Chicago Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, San Francisco Symphony, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and many more. Already a seasoned international performer who has won friends around the world, William has been hailed as a “brilliant virtuoso…a standout” (The Dallas Morning News) whose playing is “… captivating, floating delicately above the orchestra” (Chicago Classical Review). He was the third-prize winner of the 2015 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition, one of the highest-ranking Americans ever in the prestigious competition. William performs on the 1732 “Arkwright Lady Rebecca Sylvan” Antonio Stradivari, and on a violin bow by Francois Xavier Tourte, both on generous loan from the Rachel Barton Pine Foundation. Hagen’s recent performances include appearances with the Detroit Symphony and Utah Symphony, and performances at the Brevard Music Center & Festival and Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. Hagen’s 2024-25 season highlights include performances for the Richmond Symphony conducted by Valentina Peleggi, Lubbock Symphony under the direction of David Cho, Bozeman Symphony under the direction of Norman Huynh, and Pasadena Symphony conducted by Brett Mitchell. *Christ the King parishioners and school patrons receive free admission.

Palm Springs International Piano Competition - Chairman of the Jury
The Mission of Palm Springs International Piano Competition (PSIPC) is to discover, promote and inspire promising young classical pianists through triennial public competitions, offering monetary prizes and significant performance and career opportunities, while providing local community educational outreach and engagement.
In addition, PSIPC showcases and highlights wide and diverse cultural musical offerings that serve Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley communities, and beyond.

Black Hills Symphony Orchestra: Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat “Emperor”
Return favorite, Pianist, Anton Nel, performs the Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat Major Op. 73 “ the Emperor.” Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor KV 550 rounds out the program.

Chamber Music Society of Louisville: John Sharp, cello & Anton Nel, piano
Cellist John Sharp (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and pianist Anton Nel (Butler School of Music) will perform three important chamber works: Bach’s Suite for Unaccompanied Cello No. 1, BWV 1007; Shostakovich’s Sonata for Cello in D Minor, Op. 40; and Brahms’ Sonata No. 1 for Cello, Op. 40.

Sacramento State University: Recital
Anton Nel will perform works by Bach, Czerny, Toru Takemitsu, and Schumann. Nel, winner of the first prize in the 1987 Naumburg International Piano Competition at Carnegie Hall continues to enjoy a remarkable and multifaceted career that has taken him to North and South America, Europe, Asia, and South Africa. He was also a prizewinner at the 1984 Leeds International Piano Competition in England and won several first prizes at the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition in Palm Desert in 1986. The New York Times referred ot him as "an uncommonly elegant pianist" and stated that he is "an expert interpreter of Romantic music".
